Incidence of the Philadelphia chromosome and other chromosomic disturbances in adults with chronic myelocytic leukemia

The incidences of Philadelphia chromosome and other types of chromosomal alterations observed in patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) were studied. A review of the clinical charts of 149 patients with myeloproliferative disorders disclosed 74 patients (40 women and 34 men) with CML in whom chromosomal karyotypes were examined. All patients except 1 had Philadelphia chromosome. In 20 cases there were additional chromosomal abnormalities that included aneuploidy, polyploidy, duplication of Philadelphia chromosome, deletions and translocations in combination or as an isolated anomaly. There was no correlation between the chromosomal abnormality and survival time in contrast to what is seen in other types of leukemia. The findings of a rather low percentage of negative Philadelphia chromosome as opposed to 15% on foreign series seems to indicate a substantial difference that should be further pursued in low socio-economic ethnic groups in Mexico. The possibility of a clinical diagnosis based on the presence or absence of Philadelphia chromosome was difficult to rule out.
