Use of multidimensional technics of analysis in the study of specific immunoglobulins in human African trypanosomiasis

The sera of patients at different stages of African trypanosomiasis were tested with an immunoperoxidase technique with a particulate Trypanosoma brucei brucei antigen (IPI) for specific IgG and IgM and by the ELISA for IgG, IgM, IgA antibodies, and for complement fixing antibodies. The results were subjected to multidimensional analysis (discriminating factorial analysis with Jacknife test). A sufficiently certain diagnosis of the stage of the disease could not be made by the immunological profile. However the production of specific immunoglobulins, reflecting a real dysfunction of the immune system was more important at the beginning of stage 2 (sleeping sickness) than in stage one and apparently decreased in advanced stage 2.
