Chronic cardiac focal valvulitis was seen in the hearts of 3 Ugandans. One of these was proved to have trypanosomiasis by finding the parasite in the peripheral blood during life. Histologically, all 3 had a chronic meningoencephalitis and a chronic pericarditis. These findings were corroborated by observations in mice experimentally infected with Trypanosoma brucei, in which all valves showed a valvulitis containing trypanosomes.
