The authors analyze the advantages of a 1:3 (wt/wt) combination of sulfadiazine with trimethoprim (cotrimazine), compared to a combination with another sulfonamide. They report on a randomized open clinical study in 30 patients hospitalized for flare-ups of chronic bronchitis in whom the therapeutic action of cotrimazine was compared with that of ampicillin which so far, in the absence of precise bacteriological data, is still the drug of choice in these patients. Statistical analysis of the results evaluated as changes in observed parameters (duration and course of acute illness, cough, dyspnea, quantity and characters of expectorate, chest findings, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and leukocytosis), proved the high therapeutic index of the 2 drugs in comparison, with good or fair results in .apprx. 80% of the cases without significant differences between cotrimazine and ampicillin.
