In experiments on non-inbred male rats the emotional-pain stress produced in the form of neurotic anxiety results in activation of lipid peroxidation and in disturbances of oxidation and phosphorylation in mitochondria and pronounced micro-focal lesions of the myocardial structure. Preliminary administration of the inhibitor of lipid peroxidation, ionol, prevents the development of all these stressor changes. Inhibition of the stress reaction by the antioxidant ionol is manifested in prevention of the increase of the serum corticosterone level and that in the adrenals and heart, and of the fall of noradrenaline in the heat and adrenals. Simultaneously the duration of the stress-induced eosinopenia significantly diminished. Antioxidants can limit the excitation of the nerve centers determining stress reactions.
