The presence of nonestrogenic inhibitors of the rat .alpha.-fetoprotein-(Rf)-estrogen interaction was evidenced in the adult rat ovary. The compound responsible for this activity was characterized as nonpolar, dialyzable, thermostable and unreactive with anti-17.beta.-estradiol antisera. Fractionation by TLC showed that the competitor(s) both by its staining properties and Rf might be a mixture of unsaturated fatty acids. This raises the problem of the complexity of the .alpha.-fetoprotein-ovarian interaction previously demonstrated.
