A total of 796 calves in 25 groups (usually of 32 animals) was examined at a collecting centre for the presence of salmonella in the faeces before despatch to a rearing farm several hours later. Eleven calves (1.4%) in seven of the groups were infected, all with S. dublin. The infection spread in four of the groups at the rearing farm. as judged by further sampling of faeces.
