15 calves in 3 groups were used to study the features of an outbreak of salmonellosis due to Salmonella enteritidis. Group (i) received a single large quantity of colostrum as soon as possible after birth, (ii) received colostrum over a period of 48 h and (iii) received 3 pints of colostrum approx. 8 h after birth. S. enteritidis was isolated from 13 calves. Agglutination tests were carried out on pre- and post-colostral calf sera, dams' sera and colostral whey, and convalescent sera. There were wide variations in amounts of immunoglobulins absorbed by individual calves; mean values for groups (i)-(iii) were 30.6 plus or minus 9.3, 28.6 plus or minus 12.7 and 14.8 plus or minus 9.6 zinc turbidity test units resp. H and O agglutinins were found in some post-colostrum serum samples only. Only 2 of 10 calves tested developed significant flagellar agglutination titres.
