Between 1982 and 1987 the number of cases of illness in England and Wales caused by Salmonella enteritidis increased from 1101 to 6858. The zoonotic aspects of this disease are discussed. It is concluded that collaboration is urgently required between the poultry industry, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Department of Health.
