Patients (15) with history of bleeding since early childhood or later, investigated for platelet function defects, showed reduced total platelet factor 3 (PF3) content, as measured by the Stypven time of frozen and thawed platelet-rich plasma. Of these, 2 patients had isolated PF 3 deficiency, 3 showed an associated absence of aggregation, and in 10 aggregation was subnormal. A positive family history was found in 3 instances. Defects with absent aggregation were termed as thrombopathic thrombasthenia. This disease apparently has a spectrum in which patients with subnormal primary aggregation and secondary aggregation with PF3 deficiency can be included.
