Bilharziasis of the appendix

Of 300 human appendices removed surgically in 1970-71 at Damanhour General Hospital in Egypt, 36 (12%) showed evidence of Schistosoma haematobium infection. The 36 cases were classified in 5 categories: multiple subserous nodular; diffuse infiltration; solitary granuloma; diffuse subserous fibroses; mixed. All 36 patients had heavy schistosomiasis with calcification of the urinary bladder, prostate, seminal vesicles and juxta-vesical parts of the ureters.
