Leucine aminopeptidase activity in urine was significantly increased in 24 patients with active urinary schistosomiasis, 11 with active intestinal schistosomiasis, 10 with mixed schistosomal infection, 14 with clinical hepatosplenomegaly of schistosomal aetiology, 13 schistosomal cases with clinical hepatosplenomegaly and ascites and 12 with bladder cancer of schistosomal aetiology. Activity was higher in all stages of Schistosoma mansoni infection than in patients with S. haematobium or mixed infection. Urine total protein concentration was increased significantly in all groups, particularly in those with bladder cancer. There was no direct correlation between urinary leucine aminopeptidase level and protein concentration, either within individual cases or within the groups.
