The use of scanning electron microscopy in the study of haemagglutination induced by various arboviruses

Scanning EM was used to study hemagglutination by 10 arboviruses belonging to the Togaviridae [Sindbis, Getah, West Nile, dengue type 2, tick-borne encephalitis, Wesselsbron] and Bunyaviridae [Batai, Tahyna, Uukuniemi, Bhanja] families. The pictures obtained did not clarify the precise mechanism of hemagglutination by these viruses. Evidently, no fundamental differences exist in the mechanism of hemagglutination between these 2 arbovirus families. [Chicken erythrocytes were used in this study.].
