Urinary excretion of uric acid in iron deficient rats

Fe deficient rats excreted significantly lesser amounts of uric acid in urine along with a significant decrease in the plasma level as compared to healthy rats. Xanthine, the precursor of uric acid, however, had shown only marginal increase in Fe deficiency in spite of a lowered activity of xanthine oxidase, the enzyme responsible for uric acid formation.
