21 children with beta-thalassaemia major (2-14 years old) receiving regular blood transfusions were given subcutaneous desferrioxamine. Serum ferritin, 24 h baseline urinary iron excretion and desferrioxamine induced urinary iron excretion were measured. Serum ferritin concentration was correlated with the number of blood transfusions received by the child (P<0.01) and with desferrioxamine induced urinary iron excretion (P<0.05). A negative iron balance was achieved in 15 of 21 children with one dose of desferrioxamine therapy.
