Effects of cerebrospinal fluid sample collection on frequency and onset of acute fatal canine distemper-associated encephalomyelitis

Young gnotobiotic dogs experimentally inoculated with canine distemper virus were subjected to weekly sample collections of CSF. When compared with retrospective data for dogs inoculated at similar age, but not subjected to the collection procedure, mean survival time was decreased from 37.0 to 19.8 days and the expected percent mortality increased from 40 to 100%. Evidently, CSF sample collection may have adverse consequences in viremic or bacteremic patients.
