Treatment results of gastric cancer in different periods of time

The results of 711 gastric cancer cases treated from 1957-1975 were reviewed. These patients were divided into the following 4 periods according to the time of admission: 1957-1960, 1961-1965, 1966-1970 and 1971-1975. The treatment results were analyzed as to the age, site of the primary tumor, stage of disease, types of gastrectomy and thoroughness of surgery. The rate of curative operation improved during the 1970's; the 5-yr survival rate showed a marked improvement from 14.3% in the 1950's to 47.9% in the 1970's. The main reason for the improvement was the early detection of the disease. The overall incidence of stages I and II in the 1950's, 1.9%, was increased to 21.8% in the 1970's. An adequate dissection of the lymph nodes in resectable cases was the most important factor in curing a patient. The R2 gastrectomy procedure is recommended.
