Prevalence of rotavirus antibody in chickens and horses in Louisiana, USA

Of 87 serum samples collected from chickens between 1973 and 1981 in various regions of Louisiana and Mississippi, 83% were positive to the immunofluorescence test for rotavirus antibody at 1:10 dilution and 78% at 1:40 dilution. Of 101 horse serum samples collected between 1977 and 1981 in two studs and a racetrack in Louisiana, all were positive at 1:10 and 98% at 1:40. Rotavirus antibodies were also demonstrated in cattle, dogs and cats in Louisiana. It is concluded that rotaviruses are widespread in Louisiana.
