Species classification of zearalenone-producing fungi of the genus Fusarium Lk. ex Fr. isolated from wheat, corn and beans

Fusarium (163 isolates) from wheat, corn and kidney beans were tested for their zearalenone(F2)-producing capacity. When cultivated on autoclaved corn F2-producing capacity was detected in 109 isolates (66.9%) belonging to the following species of sect. Discolor, Elegans, Sporotrichiella, Martiella, Roseum, Arachnites: F. graminearum, F. gibbosum, F. gibbosum var. lactis, F. oxysporum var. orthoceras, F. sporotrichiella, F. sporotrichiella var. tricinctum, F. solani var. coeruleum, F. avenaceum, F. avenaceum var. herbarum, F. semitectum, F. nivale. More that 75% of zearalenone-producing isolates from wheat and kidney beans and more than 50% of those from corn were identified as species within the Discolor section, the number of F. graminearum and F. gibbosum species being the largest. The mass natural occurrence of the Fusarium spp. on cereals and other crops and their F2-producing capacity suggest that mycotoxin is greatly responsible for human pathology.
