A study was made of whole blood and plasma viscosity, hematocit, fibrinogen, cholesterol, protein and protein fractions in 45 patients with diabetes mellitus and 20 normal subjects. Blood viscosity was determined by means of V.N. Zakharchenko's rotation viscosimeter within the tension shift range of 0.0026 to 0.095 Pa . Blood viscosity and hematocrit were increased 1.5-fold in patients with diabetes mellitus as compared to those in normal subjects with this increase being statistically significant. The fibrinogen and cholesterol content was also greater in diabetic patients. The indications under consideration depending on the disease severity, duration and intensity of angiopathies were compared. Considerations as to the data obtained and the reported data are put forward. The role of blood viscosity, hematocrit, fibrinogen and cholesterol in the emergence and progression of diabetic microangiopathies is discussed.
