A study was made of 180 diabetes mellitus patients 16-67 yr old, who had no symptoms of damage to the arteries of the lower extremities, to determine the effects of arterial hypertension, age, length of illness and presence of diabetic angiopathy on the elastic and viscous properties of the vessels and the interrelationship of these properties to several indices of glycoprotein and fat metabolism. Patients without arterial hypertension manifested increased elastic and viscous properties of the main arteries and concurrently higher levels in the blood serum of general glycoproteins, sialic acids and .beta.-lipoproteins with lower levels of .alpha.-lipoproteins. Arterial hypertension facilitated a significant increase in elastic and viscous properties of the muscle and especially elastic-type arteries, accompanied by expressed increase in blood serum levels of glycoproteins, sialic acids, cholesterol and .beta.-lipoproteins. Increases were also caused by age, length of illness and organic affection.
