Intestinal parasites among the populations of various regions of Ecuador: statistical study

From April 1978 to July 1980, faecal examinations were made in 12 communities in 3 regions of Ecuador, Amazonia, Andean and coastal, with different environmental characteristics. 96% of the 1568 persons examined were infected, with an average of 2.3 species/individual. 14 species of parasite were found: 6 nematodes, 2 cestodes and 6 protozoa. The commonest pathogens were Trichuris trichiura (in 78%), Ascaris lumbricoides (63%), hookworm (33%) and Entamoeba histolytica (24%). Regional variations in prevalence of Trichuris, hookworm and Strongyloides are noted. Giardia lamblia and Balantidium were most frequent in children <12 years.
