In a double-blind study of patients in a general osteopathic practice, a fixed combination of a .beta.-adrenergic blocking agent (timolol maleate) and hydrochlorothiazide appeared to have certain advantages over hydrochlorothiazide alone in the control of mild and moderate essential hypertension. The preparation (Timolide) is designed for once-daily administration, which simplifies patients' compliance with the physician's instructions. No important side effects were observed during the 12 wk program.
