The title of this article is a paradox. The prefix gynae-, the generic Greek, in the word gynecology means womanhood, and pertains broadly to female maturity. Conversely, paedo-, the Greek root of the term pediatrics, pertains strictly to childhood. Thus we have on superficial analysis two mutually exclusive terms in the same title. All the same, this paradox is utterly appropriate to the situations which present when a female, to all intents and purposes merely a child, adopts the functions and attributes of the adult in the field of sex. I think, too, that the confusion which this title conveys to the thoughtful physician helps condition him to an open mind in this very special field.
