Wistar rats weighing 100 to 150 g were made diabetic by injection of alloxan and were given an alcohol-water extract (GS2) of the leaves of Gymnema sylvestre 200 mg/kg bodyweight daily in water. Some protein-bound polysaccharides, hexuronic acid, hexoses, hexosamines, non-aminopolysaccharides, sialic acid, some glycosaminoglycans, hyaluronic acid and heparan sulphate in serum, brain, kidney, heart and liver increased in diabetes. Chondroitin sulphate-A, -B and -C decreased in diabetes. Treatment with GS2 for a month restored those values to near normal.
