Chronic aflatoxicosis in cattle

A chronic disease, characterized by loss of condition, anorexia, apathy and intermittent diarrhoea with tenesmus in a herd of dairy cows in India was attributed to prolonged feeding with a concentrate feed containing groundnut cake in which aflatoxins B2, G1 and G2 were detected.Some animals became comatose and died, the highest mortality being in lactating cows. PM examination revealed petechial haemorrhages in the intestines, fluid in the abdominal cavity and liver enlargement and ulceration of the abomasum. There was considerable variation in blood serum enzyme levels, and impairment of liver function was demonstrated.
