Clinical signs and gross and microscopic lesions caused by acute aflatoxicosis are described for chickens, ducks, turkeys, pigs, sheep, monkeys, rats, mice and man. Hepatotoxicosis and carcinogenesis are the commonest results of poisoning, but in addition, haemorrhage, anorexia, stunting and decreased egg production occur in poultry, and weakness and decreased resistance to disease are seen in many species. Rainbow trout are highly sensitive to the toxin. Toxins capable of causing acute disease have been isolated from groundnuts, pecans, cassava, bread, cheese, cream, butter and rice, maize, sorghum and other grains after invasion with toxigenic strains of Aspergillus flavus.
