Relations between the blood insulin response and kalemia during the glucose tolerance test

Insulin levels during an oral glucose tolerance test rise more rapidly in subjects showing a polyphasic kalemic curve (rapid decrease followed by a rebound to normal K+ levels) than in subjects with a monophasic kalemic curve (mild but continuous decrease in K+ levels). Indeed, insulin level increases stop abruptly after 60 min in the 1st group but still act after 120 min in the 2nd group (P < 0.05). A cause/effect relationship may exist between K+ and insulin level variations.
