Incidence of arrhythmias in acute myocardial infarct treated with verapamil, digitalis and a verapamil-digitalis combination

The possible reduction in hyperkinetic arrhythmias during acute myocardial infarction by systematic use of verapamil was analyzed. To this aim 100 patients were divided at random into 4 groups: verapamil, verapamil + digitalis, digitalis and control, and their arrhythmias were monitored with the traditional method. The results demonstrated an appreciable reduction in the high-risk ventricular hyperkinetic arrhythmias, even where the incidence of these disturbances in the rhythm increased from the use of digitalis. Against this, an increase in hypokinetic arrhythmias was noted, both in the group of patients treated just with verapamil and especially in that treated with both digitalis and verapamil.
