The effect of verapamil (10 mg i.v.) on the value of stroke volume and minute heart volume was investigated in atrial fibrillation and supraventricular tachycardia using the transthoracic electroimpedance method in man. Stroke volume was monitored by the impedance method continuously. After verapamil injection tachycardia slowed down to normal values. With decreasing heart rate the stroke volume increased by a mean value of 100%, and the minute heart volume decreased initially for .apprx. 5 min and increased then reaching after 20 min a steady value higher than the initial one. Verapamil did not affect stroke volume and minute heart volume in atrial fibrillation with a slow ventricular rate.
