Forty-two patients with irritable bowel syndrome participated in a double-blind investigation with a placebo in order to estimate the possible effects of peppermint oil on the symptoms. The peppermint oil was administered in gelatine capsules in doses of 200 mg half an hour before each main meal. Thirteen out of 19 patients treated with peppermint oil and six out of 23 patients treated with the placebo improved. This difference is significant (p = 0.02). The main sided effect was pyrosis with a peppermint taste. On the basis of these findings, inclusionof peppermint oil in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome is recommended.
