Isozyme patterns of 13 enzymes were determined by cellulose acetate electrophoresis for cultures of Trypanosoma avium, T. vespertilionis, T. cruzi and T. rangeli, all (except one of T. cruzi from Brazil) isolated in Panama. Each species had distinct bands for glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICD), malic enzyme (ME), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucoisomerase, phosphoglucomutase and malic dehydrogenase (MDH). For other enzymes, 2 or more species had identically migrating bands. Among the 8 T. cruzi strains there were 2 different isozyme types of alanine aminotransferase (ALAT), fructokinase (FK), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), GOT and MDH, and 3 types of ME. In the 7 T. rangeli isolates, 2 isozyme types for ALAT, FK, G6PDH, GOT, ICD and lactic dehydrogenase were observed. Among the T. cruzi strains studied there were 6 isozyme types, and among the T. rangeli isolates there were 4. Isozyme types were associated with geographical distribution.
