Purified antigens were isolated from the water-insoluble parts of Trypanosoma lewisi which are beleived to be derived from the surface membrane. The membrane was solubilized in sodium dodecyl sulpate and fractionated on Sephadex columns. 7 protein fractions were separated. Rats which were immunized by 2 of these antigens were protected against challenge by inoculation of live trypanosomes. It seems that the protective immunogen is lightly bound to the membrane.
