Various alpha-keto acids were determined in whole blood from 13 sheep and 9 cattle with cerebrocortical necrosis, and from 7 healthy sheep and 13 healthy cattle. The disease was accompanied by high values for pyruvic, glyoxylic, alpha-keto glutaric, phenyl pyruvic and hydroxyphenyl pyruvic acids. These changes are a reflection of thiamine deficiency, since thiamine pyrophosphate is an essential cofactor in the decarboxylation of many alpha-keto acids.
