A transitory decrease in the number of circulating T-lymphocytes and the inhibition of their proliferative capacity in response to the treatment with phytohemagglutinin (PHA) was observed in experimental cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) of guinea pigs. Secondary insufficiency of the T-system of immunity may develop. The specific immune response is manifested at the tubercle stage and reaches its peak early in cicatrization. Leishmania and/or products of their metabolism were capable of inhibiting the migratory and proliferative capacity of the peripheral blood lymphocytes in response to the treatment with PHA.
