Effect of hyperbaric oxygenation on the course of open injuries of the extremities

Hyperbaric oxygenation was used as part of combined prophylaxis and treatment of wound infection in 103 victims with open injuries of the extremities (fractures, amputations, etc.). The clinical course was followed, and the character of the wound healing in the patients who received hyperbaric oxygenation was compared with that in control patients. The effect of hyperbaric oxygenation on the regional blood circulation was examined using rheovasography. Hyperbaric oxygenation contributed to a quicker regression of the traumatic edema, an earlier formation of dry necrosis with a distinct demarcation line, healing of the stump or the open fracture without suppuration, subsidence of toxemia symptoms and improvement of the blood flow in the injured extremity.
