The clinical efficacy of sulfalene meglumine, a soluble ultralong-acting sulfonamide, in the treatment of generalized meningococcal infection in adults was tested. On i.v. infusion of 1.0 and 2.0 g of the drug the therapeutic concentration of the latter in the blood and CSF was maintained for 3 and 7 days, respectively. The drug was used for treating 87 patients, to 56 of whom it was administered as the basic etiotropic agent. All patients recovered after 2-4 infusions of the drug in a dose of 1.0 g given at 3 day intervals or after a single infusion of the 2 g dose. No side effects were observed. There was no relationship between the sensitivity of the meningoccal strains isolated from the CSF and the effect of the therapy. The drug was not inferior in its efficacy to penicillin given in massive doses and was better tolerated by the patients. It is recommended that the drug be used for treating generalized meningococcal infections in adults.
