The usefulness of fenoterol aerosol (fixed dosage) as a screening test to evaluate the reversibility of bronchial obstruction in chronic obstructive bronchopneumopathies is discussed. Cases (3727) were examined and in 2120 a > 20% increase in FEV1 [forced expiratory volume in 1 s] was observed 15 and/or 30 min after drug administration. A study of 36 cases of asthmatic bronchitis in which 400 .mu.g fenoterol were compared to 1500 .mu.g orciprenaline, 100 .mu.g trimethoquinol, 200 .mu.g salbutamol and 500 mg terbutaline is reported. Fenoterol was more effective at all times than any of the other drugs. Twelve cases of reversible bronchospasm using 2 different dosages of fenoterol are reported. No statistically significant difference was found between cases treated with 200 and 400 .mu.g fenoterol, respectively.
