The course of glomerulonephritis [GN] was analyzed in 110 patients to obtain data on the spontaneous course of the disease without medical treatment; the observation period averaged 8 yr. Histological examinatin revealed mesangioproliferative GN in 55 patients, focal-proliferative GN in 48, membranous GN in 5 and proliferative-sclerosing GN in 2. Analysis of blood serum creatinine levels, proteinuria levels and mean arterial pressure revealed that the patients had morphologically favorable forms of the disease with a slowly progressing course. Haptoglobin [Hp] type was determined in 99 patients with histologically confirmed chronic GN and immunological studies were conducted in 56. The distribution of Hp types in the patients with GN did not differ from those of 2246 citizens of Berlin, East Germany (where the studies were conducted). Based on comparison of immunohistological findings on Hp type, a conclusion was reached that a lesser frequency of immunocomplex forms of nephritis was observed in patients with Hp type 1-1.
