Studies on the activities of the enzymes, e.g., aspartate amino transferase, alanine amino transferase and glutamate dehydrogenase were carried out during progressive maturation of the leaves of peanut under NaCl salinity. Salinity of the soil (NaCl; 35 meq/l) increased the activity of all the 3 enzymes at all the stages of leaf growth compared to the control plants. Participation of certain keto acids, viz. pyruvate, oxaloacetate and .alpha.-ketoglutarate, in amination and transamination reactions which are in turn regulated by alanine amino transferase, aspartate amino transferase and glutamate dehydrogenase to form amino acids such as alanine, aspartate and glutamate, respectively, is discussed in relation to salinity of the soil and leaf metabolism.
