Following administration of HgCl2 to white rats, elevated serum creatinine levels, increased excretory fraction of .alpha.-aminonitrogen and enhanced N-acetyl-.beta.-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) activity in urine proved to be equally sensitive parameters of nephrotoxicity. After gentamicin administration, the highest sensitivity was found by determining NAG activity in urine. The study of this enzymatic activity in the urine of rats was a suitable screening method of nephrotoxicity. This sensitive method failed to show pronounced nephrotoxicity of gentamicin when administered to rats pretreated with HgCl2.
