Effectiveness of radiotherapy and chemotherapy in stage IIi ovarian cancer

Two methods of treatment of stage III ovarian cancer were compared. Radiotherapy was performed in 91 women and chemotherapy in 44. The treated group was additionally divided according to the neoplasm's mass at the onset of treatment. According to this division, 39 women were stage IIIa (the peritoneal infiltrations seen during surgery did not surpass 2-3 cm in diameter); 96 women qualified as stage IIIb (the infiltrations were > 2-3 cm). The evaluation of the treatment results included objective improvement or its absence (stabilization or progress of the process) within 4 mo. after the onset of therapy and the 2-yr survival rate depending on the applied technique of treatment. In women with impalpable infiltrations at the onset of treatment (stage IIIa), the 2-yr survival rate was 87.5% after irradiation; in stage IIIb better results were seen after chemotherapy (28.8% vs. 9.5% after radiotherapy).
