Combination chemotherapy of unfavourable prognosis non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) . A retrospective study of 53 cases

Fifty-three patients affected by prognostically unfavorable NHL are evaluated. Unfavorable prognosis factors were considered: age < 15 yr; mediastinal enlargement; stage III and IV in patients with diffuse histology; previous unsuccessful chemotherapy. The best results were obtained in the 1st group (age < 15 yr), regarding the remission rate (100%) and survival duration (91% surviving at 2 yr). Poor results were obtained in the previously treated patients (3 remissions out of 15 cases), only 14% of them having a projected survival of 2 yr. Remission seems to be the most important factor influencing the duration of survival. A serious myelodepression appeared in all cases from the 8th to 12th day after completion of each cycle, but only in 11 cases was the treatment delayed because of cytopenia. None died during induction phase.
