Sera from 39 preterm infants and 35 fullterm infants of hyperbilirubinemia undergoing phototherapy for 48 h were assayed for unbound bilirubin by the peroxidase oxidation method. Preterm and full term infants were divided into 2 groups, respectively, according to their age at the beginning of phototherapy, i.e., early group (before 3 days of age) and late group (after 4 days of age). The influence of therapeutic light exposure on total serum bilirubin and unbound bilirubin levels was assessed.
