Cryptococcal meningitis in corticosteroid-treated asthmatic patient

A case is reported in a 60-yr-old man, who had been receiving corticosteroid therapy for asthma for 3 yr. Cryptococcus neoformans was cultured from cerebrospinal fluid. Therapy with amphotericin B (i.v. total dose 2850 mg and intrathecal total dose 2.6 mg) was successful. Previously reported cases of C. neoformans meningitis in 3 other asthmatic patients receiving corticosteroid therapy are reviewed.
