Oncogenicity of three strains of avian leukosis virus in White Leghorn chicks of BK line

Three strains of avian leukosis virus (ALV) were inoculated into chicks of a susceptible line (line 15I) and a commercial line (BK), free from AVL infection. The virus strains used were a field isolate of subgroup A (F-1A), strain R of avian erythroblastosis (AEV-R), and BAI strain A of avian myeloblastosis (AMV BAI-A). Oncogenic spectra, tumour incidence and incubation periods were compared between chicks of BK line and those of line 15I. F-1A was used in two different forms, A75 and A76. A75 induced tumours in 88% and 69% of the chicks of lines 15I and BK, respectively. Most of the tumours in the chicks of both lines were lymphoid leukosis (LL) and erythroleukosis (ERY). There was no significant difference in oncogenic spectrum between the two lines. A76 produced ERY in 93% of the chicks of line 15I but in only 13% of those of BK line, in which LL (40%) and fibrosarcoma (33%) developed frequently. AEV-R induced ERY in all the chicks of both lines but with a significant difference in the incubation period, the mean periods being 9.5 days in line 15I and 17.6 days in BK line. AMV BAI-A induced myeloblastosis in all the chicks of both lines with mean incubation periods of 26.9 days and 25.7 days, respectively, in lines 15I and BK. It was concluded that chicks of the BK line could be used for experiments on tumour development by these ALV strains.
