Pseudomanic-depressive illness and cognitive-behavior therapy

A history of manic or hypomanic symptoms is not pathognomonic of manic-depressive illness (MDI). The authors present a patient in whom manic symptoms probably did not represent MDI, but were part and parcel of a struggle to adapt to the omnipresent threat of death. During the course of brief cognitive-behavioral treatment, the patient experienced rapid and significant improvements without medication. He has remained symptom free since termination.
