Averaged photic evoked responses and their dispersion pattern in multiple sclerosis

The averaged photic evoked responses (APER) and the dispersion pattern (DP) were investigated in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) in comparison with normal controls. APER were normal in inion-vertex leads, while showing shape abnormalities and delayed responses in inion-parietal leads. APER abnormalities were not correlated with the existence of optic neuritis in clinical and/or ophthalmologic history, with the classification into possible and probable MS, or with the grade of disability. Abnormal DP were found especially in the group of patients over the 5th degree of disablity. APER and DP changes in MP apparently reflect particularly the reactivity changes occurring in nonspecific structures, due to the blocking mechanisms acting on these complex structures.
