Photic-evoked responses in photosensitive epilepsy

Two families with similar twins were investigated. In 1 family, the twin girls displayed photic epilepsy with changes in the averaged photic-evoked responses (APER) and in the dispersion pattern (DP). The 2 younger brothers, without photosensitivity, also dispalyed changes of APER and DP. This could point to a genetically determined photosensitivity. In the other family, only 1 of the twin girls showed photosensitivity, with normal APER but with high amplitude of DP; no other member of the family showed APER and DP changes. Photosensitivity was considered secondarily acquired. The physiopathological implications are discussed.
