Acid-base imbalance in the cerebrospinal fluid and arterial blood after brain concussion

In 41 patients with clinical evidence of brain contusion the character and intensity of acid-base equilibrium changes were evaluated in the CSF and arterial blood. Disturbances of metabolic acidosis in the fluid were observed on the 1st day after trauma. In severe contusion of the brain stem analogous direction of changes was observed in the arterial blood and in the fluid. In this form of contusion there was a tendency for reduced pO2 [O2 partial pressure] gradient between the fluid and blood. The analogous direction of changes in both these systemic fluids may be due to damaged regulatory function of the brain stem.
